Latin American Ministry of Agriculture

WASTE CHALLENGE: With the frequency of animal disease outbreaks constantly threatening livestock populations, more countries are turning to incineration to protect public health and ensure food security.

One Latin American country that imports over 250,000 head of cattle, took steps to mitigate these risks by investing a large animal incinerator from Eco Waste Solutions at each of their animal quarantine facilities located at 6 ports of entry.

If an animal falls ill or dies during the quarantine, it must be destroyed at the point-of-entry to prevent the pathogen from spreading to the country’s healthy livestock.

In past years, the dead animals were collected by a private company and disposed of in open fire pits. This disposal method created local air pollution and is no longer considered by agricultural scientists to be effective or adequate to control disease.

ECO SOLUTION:  The Ministry responsible for Agriculture was given the mandate to find an effective and environmentally sound solution to dispose of the deceased animals at the point of need.  Eco Waste Solutions performed field assessments and attended site surveys to ensure the best set-ups for the incinerators at the quarantine stations situated throughout the country.

To meet the requirements the government received 4 animal cremation units that process up to 1 tonne of plant and animal matter, and 4 other sites received larger units that process up to 3 tonnes each.

RESULTS: Having the cremation equipment available to incinerate at high temperatures provides a high level of protection.  As a result of this project, the government can assure complete destruction of the pathogenic materials that have the potential to transmit disease, as well as non-native or invasive species that can destroy sensitive habitats.

Provincial Veterinary Lab

WASTE CHALLENGE:  To create a dignified process to dispose of whole animal carcasses weighing up to 2500 lbs for a Provincial Veterinary Post Mortem Lab.

WASTE SOLUTION: Developed a custom sized animal cremation chamber that can be loaded directly from the lab’s existing overhead crane system. The unit includes a uniquely integrated hydraulic lifting device.

RESULT: Eliminated the need for time consuming manual preprocessing of the carcass to prepare for loading. The new equipment also allows the Vet Lab the flexibility of processing whole carcasses and other pathological waste in the same batch.
