WASTE CHALLENGE: With animal disease outbreaks constantly threatening livestock populations, more countries are turning to high temperature incineration to protect public health and ensure food security.

One Latin American country that imports over 250,000 head of cattle, took steps to mitigate risks to their food supply by investing in large animal incinerators from Eco Waste Solutions at each of their animal quarantine facilities located at 6 different ports of entry.

When an animal falls ill or dies during the quarantine period, the safest approach is to destroy the diseased animal at the point-of-entry. preventing the pathogen from spreading to the country’s healthy livestock in land.

In past years, the dead animals were collected by a private company and disposed of in open pit burning. This disposal method created local air pollution and is no longer considered by agricultural scientists to be an effective or adequate method of disposal for disease control.

ECO SOLUTION:  The Ministry responsible for Agriculture was given the mandate to find an effective and environmentally sound solution to dispose of the deceased animals at the point of need.  Eco Waste Solutions performed field assessments and attended site surveys to ensure the best set-ups for the incinerators at the quarantine stations situated throughout the country.

To meet the requirements the government received 4 animal cremation units that process up to 1 tonne of plant and animal matter, and 2 other sites received larger units that process up to 3 tonnes each.

RESULTS: Having the cremation equipment available to incinerate at high temperatures provides a high level of protection.  As a result of this project, the government can assure complete destruction of the pathogenic materials that have the potential to transmit disease, as well as non-native or invasive species that can destroy sensitive habitats.

Government Veterinary Lab

WASTE CHALLENGE:  A government run animal health laboratory offering postmortem, biopsy, and necropsy services must be operated at high bio safety standards and equipped to ensure biosecurity. These measures protect the public and the environment from exposure to potentially hazardous biological material. Transportation of these materials off-site for disposal increases the risk of exposures.

ECO SOLUTION: A on-site destruction solution provides the best defense. Eco Waste Solutions has built many animal cremation systems that successfully process large animal carcasses without pre-processing. This vet lab required a custom-sized solution to process a whole moose carcass, as well as cattle, horses, and smaller animals, as well as viscera, and other pathological wastes. An overhead rail system is used in the facility. To reduce handling, Eco Waste Solution’s unique hydraulic bed loader receives the carcasses directly from the monorail. Once the animal is on the bed loader it can be tipped automatically into the open cremator chamber.

RESULT: The incinerator safely processes animal remains without the need for special preparation or heavy lifting. The high temperatures, over 1000C, ensure that even the highest risk pathogens are completely destroyed
